Mystery Quilt 2020 Final

I hope you had the most wonderful weekend, relaxing and enjoying a little bit of sewing!

Maybe you had a chance to catch up and finish your blocks from our mystery quilt.

I am still amazed how quickly our 15 days of sewing passed by! We took this beautiful bundle of Super Bloom fabric and turned it into…

a bundle of blocks!

The name of this Mystery Quilt is called “California” and the pattern is now available on our website.

The next step in our journey is to sew our blocks into rows, then sew rows together. Don’t forget to push the seam allowances in opposite directions to lock your seams!

Once your quilt center is assembled, you will probably want to add some borders! I have a few ideas for you.

You can take two 5″ x 60-1/2″ strips and sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt, then take two 5″ x 69-1/2″ strips and add them to the left and right sides of the quilt.

This is the simplest option and makes your completed quilt 69-1/2″ x 69-1/2″.

You need 1 yard for border , cut 7 strips – 5″ x WOF, sew them together end to end and section them for your border lengths listed above. I used “A-9454-L” fabric from our “Super Bloom” collection

Once you’ve completed your border, quilt and add binding! (I bound my quilt with A-9456-B blue fabric.)

The same size border with a large light floral print might be more your style! Image above shows my favorite light fabric from Super Bloom. (A-9446-L)

Or maybe you’d like a dark blue border (A-9446-B) I find it amazing how the border compliments and add elegance to the quilt!

If you would like your quilt to be a little bit larger, you can add a few inner borders and a larger outer border. (You will need additional fabric for this option.)

This pieced border is absolutely beautiful and can be made with your leftover scraps! I added a 2-1/2″ strip of A-9452-L around the quilt as an inner border before adding the pieced strips around the outside of the quilt.

The dark strips are 1-1/2″ wide with varying length. I started the strip length at 1-1/2″ and grew to 5-1/2″ in 1″ increments. The light strips are the same measurements but pieced with the opposite length strip to create this 6-1/2″ total width border. (i.e 5-1/2″ dark strip with 1-1/2″ light strip, etc.)

Finally, maybe you’re like me and like applique! For this option I took 4 packages of our Super Bloom Silhouettes and followed the layout from the “California” quilt pattern.

Each border can be appliqued individually, then sewn into the quilt. These borders are 10-1/2″ x 70-1/2″ and make the finished quilt 80-1/2″ x 80-1/2″. (You’ll need 2 yards of A-9452-L for these borders, cut these lengthwise from fabric)

Mystery Quilt 2020 – Block 15

All good things must come to an end. I am so thankful that I had the honor of quilting with you for the last 15 days!

WE DID IT! We made it to the last block of our Mystery Quilt!

Let’s get these last blocks done and see the result.

For Block 15, you will need: (choose the fabrics shown above from your Super Bloom bundle)

1. Fat eighth light fabric

2. 10″ pink square

3. 10″ blue square

We will be making 4 blocks. The cutting directions are listed below:

1. 16 light half-square triangles cut from 8 squares 3-7/8″

2. 8 pink half-square triangles cut from 4 squares 3-7/8″

3. 8 blue half-square triangles cut from 4 squares 3-7/8″

Start by making blue half square triangle (HST) unit, join one 3-7/8″ light half-square triangle and one 3-7/8″ blue half-square triangle.

Trim HST units to 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ using your ruler.

Next make pink half square triangle (HST) unit, join one 3-7/8″ light half-square triangle and one 3-7/8″ pink half-square triangle.

Trim HST units to 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ using your ruler.

Push your HST unit seam allowance toward the dark fabric.

Arrange HST units into block as shown above.

Sew HST units into rows and push seam allowances in opposite directions.

Pin and sew rows together.

Trim and square your blocks to 6-1/2″. I use my 6-1/2″ Creative Grids ruler and OLFA Spinning Mat.

Repeat until you have completed 4 Mystery Quilt Block 15s.

Our final blocks will be positioned as shown above in our Mystery quilt! Note the rotation of the block in quilt layout.

Mystery Quilt 2020 – Block 14

Welcome back to our Mystery Quilt and I’m so glad that you took the time to join us!

We had such a beautiful sunny day her and I just wanted to take a minute to wish Happy Birthday to my husband Michael.

He has been helping me so much to bring this mystery quilt to all of you!

Speaking of which – let’s get to our next block!

For block 14, you will need: (choose the fabrics shown above from your Super Bloom bundle)

1. 12″ light square

2. 10″ dark blue square

3. 10″ light square

4. 10″ light square

5. Fat eighth dark blue fabric

If you remember our block 11 – this block is the mirror image of that block.

We will be making 4 blocks. The cutting directions are listed below:

1. 4 light half-square triangles cut from 2 squares 2-3/8″

2. 4 dark blue half-square triangles cut from 2 squares 2-3/8″

3. 16 light half-square triangles cut from 8 squares 2-3/8″

4. 12 dark blue half-square triangles cut from 6 squares 3-7/8″

5. 4 light half-square triangles cut from 2 squares 3-7/8″

6. 4 – 2″ x 2″ dark blue squares

7. 4 – 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ light squares

It is important to do just one section at a time of this block. Let’s start with the unit shown above.

Start by making a dark blue half square triangle (HST) unit, join one 2-3/8″ light half-square triangle and one 2-3/8″ dark blue half-square triangle as shown above.

Next sew two light 2-3/8″ HST to the initial unit. Press seams toward light.

Finally add dark blue 3-7/8″ HST as shown above. Press seam toward dark blue and trim this unit to 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″.

For the next unit, we will begin by arranging the dark blue 2″ square, two light 2-3/8″ HST, and 1 dark blue 3-7/8″ HST.

Start by sewing the two small light triangles to the dark blue square.

Push seam allowance toward the light triangles, then add the dark blue 3-7/8″ HST as shown above.

Press seam allowance toward dark blue and trim this unit to 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″.

Arrange and sew 1 light 3-7/8″ HST and 1 dark blue 3-7/8″ HST. Press seam allowance toward the blue and trim to 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″.

Arrange all 3 units and 1 light 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ square as shown above.

Sew to rows, then sew rows together. Press and trim to 6-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ using your Creative Grids 6-1/2″ ruler.
