Mystery Quilt 2020 – Block 10

The last few days I have received so many beautiful messages from all of you. Thank you for quilting along with me and for all of your kind words. It means so much to hear from you. One message that really touched my heart was from Cindy — she included a prayer that I wanted to share with all of you.

Let’s stay close in heart this week and keep stitching.

For block 10, you will need: (choose the fabrics shown above from your Super Bloom bundle)

1. 10″ dark blue square

2. 10″ blue square

3. 10″ blue square

4. 10″ blue square

5. Fat eighth light fabric

We will be making 4 blocks. The cutting directions are listed below:

1. 4 – 2″ x 2″ dark blue squares

2. 4 – 2″ x 2″ blue squares

3. 4 – 2″ x 2″ blue squares

4. 12 – 2″ x 2″ blue squares

5. 8 – 2″ x 2″ light squares

6. 16 – 2″ x 3-1/2″ light rectangles

Join two 2″ blue squares and two 2″ light squares to make 1 four-patch.

Pin, sew, open the seam in the back and press. For more details, visit our YouTube channel.

Arrange 2″ blue squares and 2″ x 3-1/2″ light rectangles on either side of your four patch unit, as shown above. Sew into rows using a 1/4″ seam allowance and press your seam allowance toward the rectangles.

Sew rows together and press your block.

Trim and square your block to 6-1/2″, I love using my 6-1/2″ Creative Grids ruler and OLFA Spinning Mat to trim these blocks.

Repeat until you have completed 4 Mystery Quilt Block 10s.

Our tenth blocks will be positioned as shown above in our Mystery Quilt! Note position of dark blue fabrics in quilt layout.

I am so excited to start using some of the darker blues from the Super Bloom collection!

Mystery Quilt 2020 – Block 9

Welcome back and I hope you’re ready for a weekend of stitching!

I am looking forward to some free time this weekend to catch up on my blocks, and be ready to show you my quilt in just a couple days!

Great news, we were able to get a few more Super Bloom fat eighth bundles. If you need a bit more fabric or maybe just a splash of Super Bloom, these are perfect for you.

On to our next block!

For Block 9, you will need: (choose the fabrics shown above from your Super Bloom bundle)

1. 1/2 yard blue fabric

2. 1/2 yard light fabric

We will be making 16 blocks. The cutting directions are listed below:

1. 64 blue half-square triangles cut from 32 squares 3-7/8″

2. 64 light half-square triangles cut from 32 squares 3-7/8″

Start by making blue half square triangle (HST) unit, join one 3-7/8″ light half-square triangle and one 3-7/8″ blue half-square triangle.

Chain sewing works great when we have a lot of triangle units to make!

32 HST units need seam allowance pushed toward light and 32 HST units need seam allowance pushed toward blue fabric.

Keep these groups separate, this is an important step in preparing for assembly.

Trim all HST units to 3-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ using your ruler.

Select 4 triangles – 2 with seam allowance toward light, and 2 with seam allowance toward blue. Alternate seam allowances when arranging HST units into block shown above.

Sew into rows.

Push seam allowances in opposite direction as shown above.

Pin and sew rows together.

Square your blocks to 6-1/2″. I use my 6-1/2″ Creative Grids ruler and OLFA Spinning Mat to trim these blocks.

Repeat until you have completed 16 Mystery Quilt Block 9s.

Our ninth blocks will be positioned as shown above in our Mystery quilt! Note the rotation of the block in quilt layout.

Please DO NOT start sewing blocks together at this time.

We did our blocks the traditional way, but if you would like to speed things up you could use our handy 3″ finished size triangle paper (3-1/2″ unfinished).

Mystery Quilt 2020 – Block 8

Welcome to our Mystery Quilt! So many blocks are being made and so many wonderful quilting friends are joining us! Thank you for your participation, I am having so much fun with you all.

Are you feeling a little blue?

Maybe having a bit of cabin fever?

Missing your favorite neighbor?

Just pull out your sewing machine and start stitching with us!

If you are just getting started and looking for a color option other than Super Bloom, another one of our fabric collections, Bed of Roses, is a gorgeous alternative for this quilt. Or you could always simply pull matching fabrics from your fabric stash!

Lets get moving – it is time for our next block!

For Block 8, you will need: (choose the fabrics shown above from your Super Bloom bundle)

1. 12″ blue square

2. 12″ blue square

3. 10″ blue square

4. Fat quarter light fabric

We will be making 8 blocks. The cutting directions are listed below:

NOTE : Please notice that some of your triangles are cut from half square triangles (HST) and some from quarter square triangles (QST).

1. 24 light half-square triangles cut from 12 squares 3-7/8″

2. 32 light half-square triangles cut from 16 squares 3″

3. 8 blue half-square triangles cut from 4 squares 3-7/8″

4. 8 blue quarter-square triangles cut from 2 squares 5-1/2″

5. 8 blue quarter-square triangles cut from 2 squares 5-1/2″

Arrange two light 3″ HST and one blue 5-1/2″ QST as shown.

Place light HST right sides together with blue QST as shown.

Sew using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

Press your seam allowance towards the blue triangle, I only finger press as to not stretch the bias edges.

Sew the second light HST triangle.

Press your seam allowance towards the light triangle. You have just completed your first Flying Geese unit!

Arrange and repeat all the steps from above to create another flying geese unit using the second blue QST.

You have completed your second Flying Geese unit.

Trim your Flying Geese units to 4-3/4″ x 2-5/8″ using your ruler.

Arrange your two Flying Geese units with one blue 3-7/8″ HST and one light 3-7/8″ HST as shown above.

Sew using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seams toward the outside.

Arrange your diagonal Flying Geese row with two light 3-7/8″ HST as shown above. Sew and press seams toward the outside.

Trim your your block to 6-1/2″. I use my 6-1/2″ Creative Grids ruler.

Repeat until you have completed 8 Mystery Quilt Block 8s.

Our eighth blocks will be positioned as shown above in our Mystery quilt, We are getting there! Do you have a favorite so far?
