Alaska Rainbow Quilt Along – Week 6

Updated: Jun 23, 2021

Welcome back for the sixth week of our Alaska Rainbow Quilt Along.

Only one more block left, can you believe it?

What is everyone planning to do with their finished quilts? Do you have plans to gift it for Christmas or maybe you’ll just cuddle up with it in front of the fire? Here is last week’s blog for anyone who is playing catching up.

This week we will complete blocks 7 and 10.

Grab your supplies – Alaska Rainbow Pattern, Alaska Templates, rotary, ruler, fabric pencil, and Aurifil thread 2310 – and lets get to quilting!

Block 7 – We will make a total of 4 Block 7’s. Begin by arranging your cut pieces to form the block.

Assemble one Diamond A and two Half-Diamond Bs. Mark both Half-Diamonds. Pin and sew the first Half-Diamond B to Diamond A. Press seams open before sewing the next. Use your Wedge C template to precisely trim and square up unit.

Repeat steps to complete the remaining 3 Diamond wedges.

For the corner units, mark Triangle D and pin to Wedge C before sewing. Press seams open.

Repeat to make all four corners, then arrange all units to form the block.

Pin wedge units to each corner unit, sew, and press seams open.

Then trim using your ruler and rotary to square each unit for a perfect 90o angle.

Pin and sew squared units together into block halves, then sew halves together to complete block, and press.

Repeat 3 times to make a total of four Block 7’s.

Block 10 – We will be making a total of four Block 10’s. Arrange all your fabric as shown above.

This block is extremely similar to Block 7, but it is not exactly the same – notice here how the block’s colors are reversed.

Assemble one Diamond A and two Half-Diamond Bs. Mark both Half-Diamonds. Pin and sew the first Half-Diamond B to Diamond A.

Press seams open before sewing the next. Use your Wedge C template to precisely trim and square up unit.

Edyta’s Tip: Notice the bunny ears peaking out after we press– grab your sewing scissors and snip it off to prevent it from showing on your finished quilt.

Repeat these steps for the remaining 3 Diamond wedges.

For the corner units, mark Triangle D and pin to Wedge C before sewing. Press seams open.

Repeat to make all four corners, then arrange all units to form the block.

Pin, sew, and press quartered units before trimming using your ruler and rotary to square off each unit to a perfect 90o angle.

Finally, pin, sew, and press to assemble block.

Repeat 3 times to make a total of four Block 10’s.

Now switching over to our scrappy version of our Alaska Rainbow Quilt…

Scrappy Block 7Cut your fabric using the Alaska Templates and arrange them as shown above. Continue the steps to mark, pin, sew, and press as directed.

Repeat this exact color arrangement 3 more times to make four Block 7’s.

Scrappy Block 10Cut your fabric using the Alaska Templates and arrange them as shown above. Continue the steps to mark, pin, sew, and press as directed.

Repeat this exact color arrangement 3 more times for all four Block 10’s.

Next week is our final block. Who is excited as I am to see our quilts come together?!

We love seeing how each and every one of you’re doing with your Alaska Rainbow blocks! Please make sure to tag us in your progress pictures along the way at #alaskarainbowquiltalong
