The back of a quilt is often underrated -
a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered!
Backing sometimes made be the perfect spot to add something special to your quilt.
For the Summer Mystery Quilt 2022, I decided to try something fun with my backing.
I used leftover Linen Texture fabrics and sprinkled in a big print fabric from our Secret Stash Earth Collection. This splash of color and print really took my quilt to the next level.
It was super simple and super fun! The best part is that I got to use up some leftovers!
Now I can go buy new fabric!
How to achieve a backing like this for any of your quilts?
Look at your quilt top then
dive into your extra fabric stash to pick
out what colors you think best compliments.
Use large fabric swatches and lay them all out
to envision what it will look like
when sewn together.
Keep it simple.
You don't want too much going on in the back or
it could compete with your quilt top.
Here are some options below for how to break your backing into sections.
Now all that you have to do is use up your scraps and fill those sections with leftover fabrics.
Don't be afraid to get creative, and remember to make your backing at least 4" larger than your quilt top.
Notice, you can do something very simple or take it a little further.
And you don't have to stop there!
After trimming my selected backing fabrics, I noticed I had some smaller leftovers that were similar in size. That got me thinking, what more can I do with this beautiful fabric? What about a scrappy binding!
Let your creativity run free when completing a quilt.

I love making scrappy quilt backings from leftover fabrics! I made 2 quilts where I ended up liking the backings even more than the quilt fronts. I definitely agree to keep it simple. That way when the backing doesn't end up as perfectly centered as the feont and you trim it for binding, you don't lose your hard work piecing.
That backing for a special occasion quilt with the sentiments of friends and family is a sensational idea.
The backing is beautiful! Can you tell us the quilt pattern? It‘s gorgeous!
